Daicel's history began with the manufacturing of celluloid, using cellulose nitrate, a cellulosic derivative. Based on the technology of celluloid production, highly diversified cellulosic derivative production is one of the company's core business operations. Among these derivatives, cellulose acetate elicits the greatest volume of demand, due to its wide range of applications, which include cigarette filters, acetate fibers, photographic film, and protective film for LCD polarizing boards.
Acetate tow for cigarette filters, made from cellulose acetate, is supplied to markets both inside and outside of Japan. Another mainstay of cellulosic operations is in water-soluble polymer products. Carboxymethylcellulose(CMC) is used in the fields of civil engineering, oil drilling and fish feed. Hydroxyethylcellulose(HEC) is used in paints, polymerization, and cosmetics. JELLNER, cationized HEC, is applied in cosmetics.

[Cellulose Acetate]
Cellulose acetate is made from pulp or linter and acetic acid. Highly resistant to heat, chemicals and flame, it is used for cigarette filters, acetate fibers, photographic film, plastics, and separation membranes.

[Cellulose Acetate]
Cellulose acetate is used in protective film for LCD polarizing boards, which are indispensable in liquid crystal displays, such as LCD TVs, notebook computers, and cell phones. In this age of advanced LCDs, cellulose acetate has great future potential.

[Acetate Tow]
CIGATOW, an acetate tow for cigarette filters, has been manufactured from cellulose acetate since 1957. In concert with technical centers inside and outside Japan, Daicel provides dedicated technical services.

[CMC (Carboxymethyl Cellulose)]
CMC is an anionic cellulose derivative. It dissolves in water and becomes a colorless and transparent viscose liquid. It is widely used in the fields of civil engineering, oil drilling, fish feed, food products, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and textile printing.[Photo] CMC is applied as stabilizing agent to civil engineering works.

[HEC (Hydroxyethyl Cellulose)]
HEC, a non-ionic cellulose derivative, is used for rinse, shampoo, paint, cement mixing agent, and antiwashout admixture for underwater concrete. JELLNER, a cationized HEC, is applied in cosmetics, particularly in rinses and shampoos.

[Celluloid]
The manufacture of celluloid was the starting point for Daicel. Highly transparent, tough, and hygroscopic, celluloid possesses colors, luster, patterns, and a pleasant texture not found in other plastics. It is therefore used in a variety of products, including eyeglass frames, toys, pens, and pencils.
